Make your garden count

A useful harvest starts with a clear plan.

Growing without a plan

  • Buy seeds you never sow
  • Grow food your family won’t eat
  • Buy tools before you need them
  • Let a good harvest go to waste

More work. More waste.

The wartime garden way

  • Choose food you already buy
  • Start with the space you have
  • Use sound tools and pots you own
  • Plan how to use what you pick

A patch with a purpose.

Count produce you use instead of buying, then subtract growing costs. Savings depend on your plot, household and harvest; £5,000 is a target, not a guaranteed result.

MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE CHANNEL

Bill Barnes

A fictional farming storyteller

Bill is the channel’s fictional character. In his story, he served in the war and grew food to help feed his fellow soldiers. A useful crop meant food to share with the men beside him.

When he came home, he kept working the land. The channel shares old ways to grow food that feeds a family, work with the seasons, mend what breaks and put food by for winter.

That is what the Bill Barnes channel is about: plain, useful farming ideas, one job at a time.

“Pull on your boots. There’s work to do.”

Bill Barnes
